The very northern region of Italy, just before the Austrian border, is known as "Sud (south) Tirol". Prior to World War I this area belonged to Austria - thanks to the Hapsburg dynasty and the Austro-Hungarian empire. From 1927, this region has been an autonomous province of Italy, and today the inhabitants enjoy a lifestyle, cuisine and language that embraces both Italy and Austria.
Just 1 hour from Innsbruck, into Sud Tirol, lies the charming village of Bressanone (Brixen in German). With its old lanes and town residences, arbours and bridges; it's churches, the cathedral, the cloister, its Gothic frescoes, the Hofburg former residence of the bishop (today diocesan and crib museum) and its avenues and parks, vineyards and orchards, Bressanone/Brixen invites you to stay awhile and enjoy. Get the chance to know the South Tyrolean way of life, its customs and traditions. The sense of responsibility of the North, mixed with the elegance of the South! A mixture of both; - this is what makes up the fascinating power of Bressanone/Brixen
