  • DOLOMITES - ADRIA

Following the tracks of the old Dolomite-Train to Venice
    Dolomites - Adria

    Individual tour
    approx. 275 km

From the north-eastern Dolomites this tour leads through the valley Höhlenstein and pass the famous „Drei Zinnen“ to the olympic town Cortina. Further on we cycle on the old railway-track to Pieve die Cadore, birthtown of Tizian. After a short transfer we reach the vally of the “Gelati” producers and cycle on to Ponte nelle Alpi (the bridge of the Alpes) to the Dolomite town Belluna. From here through the Lower Alps to Bassano del Grappa, where we finally reach the plains. But before that we visit the picturesque little town Asolo and then we reach the city Treviso. Cycling along the river Sile we reach the Mediterranean: either in Jesolo, for everybody who wants to extend his stay by some days, or directly in Mestre/Venice.

    Route characteristics:
Easy tour, the first two days mostly on the old railway-trace of the Dolomite-railway. From the 3 rd day slightly uphill and downhill, the last day flat on the plains of the Po.

    Parking:
Parking free of charge on the unguarded car park at the start hotel.

    How to get there:
By car via Brenner-highway to Brixen, via the Pustertal to Niederdorf/Toblach or via the pass Felbertauern to Lienz in East-Tyrol and further on to the valley Hochpustertal.
By air to Innsbruck, by train Innsbruck – Franzensfeste, from here on to the valley Hochpustertal.
    Journey back:

By shuttlebus (50 € per person).

    Tour course :

    Day 1 - Individual Arrival Hochpustertal (Niederdorf/Toblach)
Tour information and handout of bicycles at 18.00 o'clock.

    Day 2 - Hochpustertal – Cortina: approx.35 km
From Toblach we follow the cycle path through the valley Höhensteintal, past the lake Toblachersee and the soldiers-graveyard, reminding us of the World War I. Further on we cycle past the lake Dürrensee, to the left you see the remarkable mountains “Drei Zinnen” ( translated three pinnacles ). Here a slight ascent leads to the boarder “Gemärk – Cimabanche” into the county Belluno. Now we descent relaxed, the valley opens to the south and we reach the Dolomite-city Cortina with the marvellous mountain-scenery.

    Day 3 - Cortina – Belluno: approx. 45 km
Today we cycle slightly downhill, mostly on the old railway terrace. We leave Cortina (to our left we see the mountains of Sorapis and to the right the “Five Towers” – Cinque Torri) and arrive at San Vito. Via the Boite-valley the way leads farther on to the south until we reach the point of intersection Pieve/Calalzo. From here on we take the train to Longarone and again cycle until Belluno.

    Day 4 - Belluno – Feltre: approx. 35 km
We leave Belluno, the small capital of this county (80.000 inhabitants), for todays target Feltre, cycling through avenues and hilly landscapes.

Day 5 - Feltre – Bassano del Grappa: approx. 50 km
Passing the lake Corlo and descending conveniently down to the valley Brentatal we reach Bassano del Grappa, situated on the river Brenta pouring into the plains. The name Grappa derives from the Monte Grappa, but of course a good grappa can be enjoyed here also. Do not miss the sights San Francesco, the Museo Civico or the Piazza della Libertà.

    Day 6 - Bassano d. G. – Treviso: approx. 55 km
We finally leave the Alps and soon can admire the first villas of the star-architect Balladio. The little town Asolo invites us to take a break before we cycle on to the town Treviso – the town of watercourses. Along the canals not only the arcades and the facades of the houses are to be discovered but also a great number of shops. The hot spot of fashion (shoes, Benetton etc.) is found here.

    Day 7 - Treviso – Venedig/Mestre : approx. 35 km
Along the river Sile we cycle on the the Adria, directly to Mestre/Venice, to pay our respect to „Serenissima“ with all her stately buildings.

    Day 8:
Individual departure or extension of the stay on the sea.

    Schedule 2005:
Arrival each Saturday from April 23rd to October 1st (last start).
